The unique properties of flax

The issues of environmental safety and  the preservation of the ecologically-friendly environment are very topical nowadays, thus the widespread use of the natural building materials is greatly gaining popularity. A vivid example of it is the linen heat insulation  having won housing builders’ attention.

The uniqueness of the flax properties had been confirmed on the stage of human civilizations development! For example, the world-famous Christian relics - the Shroud of Turin, in which Jesus Christ’s body was wrapped, is a linen cloth. The mummies were wrapped in it in ancient Egypt.

Flax materials were widely used in Europe in 19-20 centuries. Intended use was focused on the treatment and prevention of various diseases, such as ague, paralysis or asthma. Besides, during the First World War, and later during the Second World War, a linen cloth was used for dressing open wounds, stopping bleeding, and as a disinfectant and anti-allergic agent. At present, the linen thread is applied in surgery for suturing of wounds. Such thread is not rejected by the soft tissues of the body and dissolves over time.

For a long time scientists have been researching the antiseptic properties of the flax fiber. The composition of the leaves and stems contains the linamarin glycoside and the salts of the silicic acid, which inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, fungal colonies, block the development of viral diseases. The significant results have been got by the Ministry of Health of Belarus. The experiment  has demonstrated that flax antiseptic property stimulates the body to a more intensive blood circulation, thereby reducing fatigue. In addition, as a result of comparative studies it has been determined an increase in making of immunoglobulin A in the blood due to sleeping on the linen sheets.

In the late '90s the Central Research Institute of the integrated automation of light industry fundamentally studied the physical parameters of linen cloth, such as air- and moisture permeability, electrifiability, heat conduction. It was defined that the flax fibers had the low value of static electricity, the optimal characteristics of the absorption and return of moisture. An additional advantage of the linen material is the ability of absorbing ultraviolet and electromagnetic radiation. Moreover, the experimentally confirmed fact is reducing the level of radiation.
